Chapter Twenty-Four
Wes shut the door to his brother’s office with a thud and walked around the room. Although the barn was clean, the smell of diesel fuel filled the air.
“The prodigal son has returned.” Ben wheeled his chair back from the desk and tilted his chin upward.
“I’m just here for the weekend.”
“Wouldn’t expect anything more.”
Wes’s hands clenched. Screw you. The flippant remark was on the tip of his tongue, but he stayed silent. He exhaled and straightened his back. Wes wasn’t going to feed into Ben’s bullshit this time. “Mom asked me to be here, so I’m here.”
Ben nodded. “That’s good. I know she will appreciate you being here. She misses you.”
“I know.”
“Who’s the girl with all the legs?” Ben asked as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Her legs are none of your business. Keep your eyes off them.”
“Ah, someone is a little testy.”
Damn it. I fucking walked right into that one. Wes knew better. Ben was a married man, so it wasn’t like he was interested in Kim. Now, Wes had made it seem like he was. Well, he was interested, but Wes wasn’t going to do anything about it. “Forget it.”
“Fine. I’ll let it pass this once, so who is she?”
“Kim.” Wes dropped an envelope on the desk. It still took him by surprise to see computer equipment, file cabinets, and scanners lying amongst the piles of papers and grease rags. Wes could hardly begrudge Ben for being more organized. Although he wanted to, on principle, Wes was mature enough to realize that would make him very childish.
Ben raised his eyebrows. “‘The’ Kim? Your assistant?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Wes flopped down on the seat across from Ben. I don’t talk about her that much. Do I?
“The way you always talk about her, I couldn’t decide if she was an illusion or superwoman.”
Crap. Wes’s face flushed as he shifted in his seat. It groaned under his weight. “Well, as you can tell, she’s real.”
When was the last time we shot the shit? As adults? Never. Wes realized he missed the days before guilt and doubts about fitting in had driven a wedge between them. At one time, he’d idol worshiped his brother.
“Yes, she is. I can’t wait to get the chance to meet her. So…”
“So? What?”
“Are you sleeping with her?”
Wes glared at Ben. “Don’t be an ass.”
“I take that as a no. If it were yes, you would have told me to mind my own business. The next question is, why not?”
“And why do you think I should?” The question slipped out before he had the chance to stop himself. Was he trying to find a reason to have sex with her? Or an excuse not to? Did other people sense their connection?
This whole conversation is ridiculous. Why suddenly has Ben decided to stick his big nose in my business anyway? If Kim walked in, she would be pissed off that they were talking about the two of them having sex. She was his employee, not his plaything.
